Keys to Building a Back to Eden Style Garden

1. Get Connected
   1. Commit to doing this with friends, neighbors, or church family.  The accountability and community that evolves from this is just as beneficial as the vegetables themselves.
   2. Psalm 19:1-3 = “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.”
2. Get “the Covering”
   1. Soil was meant to be covered, not left bare and manicured.  For example, the forest floor is covered with layers of organic material and it’s the best soil available.
   2. By adding a thick covering to your garden, you restore a covering that was intended by God’s natural design.
   3. Tip: Try contacting your local Tree Service companies(Lawn and Landscape companies as well) or Universities for free mulch or help testing your soil.  Also, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have been programs that give free mulch and soil away.

3.Apply “the Covering”

1. The film producers use wood chips as their covering, while other permaculture methods use layer (aka. lasagna mulching) method.
2. 4-6” of wood chips your first year and then add a few more inches every consecutive year.  Be sure to check the nitrogen levels in your soil, as some wood chips may cause this to initially spike, requiring a compost layer to help correct it.
   1. Most cities have a farming or extension office that does this testing for around $12.
1. Plant Seeds
   1. Find a seed company that you know and trust to give you the most natural seeds available.
   2. If you are able to plant native plant varieties to your geographical area, they will be better able to handle the unique conditions of your garden.
   3. Tip: Plant your seeds in the soil, not the in wood chips.
2. Nourish Your New Growth
   1. Traditional methods will till in manures and fertilizers.  The benefit is that they often give you instant nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus.  The downside is that you will need to add more over time, and they often lack the necessary micronutrients plants need.
   2. Back to Eden method allows the covering (i.e. wood chips) to put the natural micronutrients back into the soil overtime, while protecting the soil and microorganisms from the damaging heat of the sun.
3. Water
   1. 95% reduction in watering is typical for Back to Eden style gardeners.
   2. Watering from the ground (via drop line, soaker hose, etc) is far more effective and helps plants stay free of bacteria, mildew, and other diseases.
4. Reap a Bountiful Harvest 
   1. The Weeding War
      1. There is a significant drop in the amount of weeding reported by Back to Eden farmers, because the soil is not trying to cover itself.
      2. Purpose of Weeds:  Weeds are a naturally occurring “gift” of God to protect the soil and allow microorganisms to flourish.  Soil exposed to sun and heat will become sterile if there no moisture or plant growth.  Many weeds are actually God’s design to “fix” the soil by covering it.
      3. Benefit of Back to Eden with weeding:  Because the soil is not bare and trying to cover itself, the weeds simply are not needed to cover the soil.  The thick mulch allows the roots to be pulled out easily from the richer soil, so the roots are more accessible to be pulled.

   1. Crop rotation is necessary on soils that lack a covering, however Back to Eden is finding that when the covering is over the soil, the need for rotation is non-existent.
      1. Paul Gautshchi, says that when the soil lacks the covering, the plants deplete the nutrients already in the soil without replenishing it.  When the covering exists (i.e. wood chips or layer composting), the covering disintegrates and replenishes the nutrients used in growth, thus decreasing the need for strict crop rotations.

   1. Resistant to disease and local conditions
   2. Has not been changed or genetically modified after 1945 (pre-World War II)
   3. Increased nutrients and flavor
      1. Heirloom tomatoes are a prime example of the difference and variety in flavor and appearance.
2. Tips to Starting a Garden
   1. Start Small (4’x4’ garden) and then add to it each year so you know what you are able to manage and use.
   2. Prepare the soil
      1. Your plants will only be as healthy as your soil, so before you plant anything… get your covering!  See info on Back to Eden Gardening
      2. For smaller garden plots, the company “Happy Frog” makes an organic soil conditioner that will really boost damaged soil.
3. Get out of the “row method thinking”
   1. Companion Planting – mixing complimenting vegetables and herbs that will help the other resist disease and increase flavor.
      1. Tomatoes with basil, dill, carrots, and/or nasturtium
      2. Broccoli and fennel
      3. Three Sisters – Corn, squash, and climbing beans
      4. Radishes, squash
      5. Beets, onions
      6. Four corns in a square, climbing beans up the corn, potatoes around the outside.
4. Visit your local farmer’s market
   1. Talk with local farmers and gardeners who are experts in the unique conditions of your geographical area.
   2. As you get to know the local farmers, ask to visit their gardens and see first hand what others are doing.  Share resources and ideas in your local area.

About the Artist

As a young teen, Josh dedicated his teenage years to the Lord, and since walked a life devoted to the Lord.  For the last decade, Josh has spent several hours a day in adoration prayer: “I usually begin by asking God what I am to adore Him about today.  Then I adore Him for that attribute of His nature.”  Josh is well known in his community for the presence of God in his life, for his purity, and devotion.  Josh has grown up in Kansas City and has been involved in the International House of Prayer, the Daniel Academy, Joseph International his entire life.  He has a unique ability to bring the presence of God through music, and plays music that expresses the nature of God.  Josh has a heart to produce music that facilitates the presence of God and healing.  Currently, Josh is a student at Kansas University studying engineering.
